To Medifast or not to Medifast

I really need to get back on the diet train. Should I join Weight Watchers? It’s never really worked for me. Jenny? I have a friend who is doing it now with success and I actually did it back in High School and lost 30 pounds. Post thyroid it doesn’t work for me though. Medifast? I have a pantry full of the stuff that went unused and moved with us to the house. Nothing sounds as good as just eating right though. Bah. Why can’t it be easy? Maybe after Easter.

Medifast

I’m back on the diet train today. We’re still moving, and I uncovered a ton of unused boxes of Medifast. I figure I can stick to it for a few weeks until we are fully moved in, and hopefully get rid of all of the extra packets I have in the pantry. It’s kind of pricey to let them go to waste, plus if I get back into the swing of things I can place another order and not go the colon cleanse route again.

Alli

With celebrities going to drug rehab like it’s going out of style, I can definitely see why some people would be scared about taking new over the counter weight loss pills. I know Alli is a nightmare for thyroid patients, so I probably will never try the plan. I am curious how it has worked for others though. I like the sound of the plan because it really just asks that you watch what you eat as well as start and exercise plan. Those are both common sense pieces, so how well do the pills themselves work? I’ve seen the system on sale at several local stores. – about $60

Looking for nutrition advice from professionals in the know? Want help 24/7? Look no further than BitWine.

I am constantly looking to find the right balance of exercise and nutrition. When I heard about a site that staffs skilled individuals known as “advisors” and then connects them with people interested in learning from those skills (i.e. ME!), I have to admit I was really intrigued. That’s what http://Nutrition.BitWine.com is all about.

Whether you’re a user looking for the perfect nutrition advice for your special needs (I’m hypothyroid), or a professional nutritionist looking to move your practice online full time– this is the place to be. There is full audio and video capability to allow client/professional interaction and a searchable directory that will help visitors find exactly the person that can help. I think this is a really unique concept, and I cannot wait to give it a try. – fees vary

Freeze It

A long time ago I hurt my knee working out. The pain is on and off, depending how much activity it gets. I took a nasty and embarrassing spill down the stairs at work a few months ago and landed pretty hard on both knees. When I began working out again a month ago, I started to notice a lot of pain and I knew that I had aggravated my old injury.
Last night I had Dave apply some Freeze It on my knee. It is an all natural pain gel for muscle and joint pain. It was absolutely amazing how much better I felt after it was applied. We immediately went to a book store to walk around and stand in line at midnight for the Harry Potter book. I had no pain that whole time or before bed either. I like that you can buy it in a roll-on version in addition to the tube. It isn’t greasy, nor does it stain– plus it doesn’t smell bad. I wish I had known that a product like this would help so much.I applied some Freeze It this morning too, and have been pain free all day. I know that I need to make an appointment with my doctor, but until then this will be a wonderful way for me to continue working out and not having pain in my knee and joints. It is really inexpensive too. – $9.99

Slim-Fast Optima

So it’s been a few weeks since I’ve dieted. It’s a vicious circle. I diet for a week or two, lose 5-7 pounds, then stop. Two weeks later I’ve gained all the weight back. Next week’s diet of choice is going to be Slim-Fast. I don’t know what “Optima” is, but I do know that I have two cases of Chocolate Royale down in the car ready for me to take to work next week for breakfast and lunch. I remember Slim-Fast boasting one for breakfast, one for lunch, and then a sensible dinner… but on my latest visit to their site apparently they want me to eat a tuna sandwish with one shake, and even to incorporate fruit into my diet. Wow. Sarcasm aside, I think that teaching people how to make smart choices while losing weight is a smart one. Obviously if you drink all your meals and then start eating again later you’re going to gain it all back, right? At any rate, a box of bar will set you back $3-4 and I found the drinks on sale at Wal-Mart. Wish me luck! – 2 for $10

Alli Weight Loss Program

I’ve tried almost every weight loss program under the sun. Losing weight has been even harder since discovering I have hypothyroidism 5 years ago. I just read about the first and only FDA approved over the counter weight loss pill/program called Alli. What I like about this product is that they don’t promise miracle results. They state right on the site that you have to work to get results. I know that better than anyone. What this does is assists you by preventing some fat to be absorbed by your body.  There are also recipes as well as online guidance available as you follow the plan. Side effects could include gas with oily spotting, loose stools, or more frequent stools.   It will be available on June 15 in all major drug and grocery stores. I will not be jumping on the ban-wagon at first– it’s always wise to wait and see what more serious effects come from new medications. – $67.99 (Costco)

Dual Action Cleanse

I have done several cleanses in the past year. Some have been better than others. Heard of the Master Cleanse? If you haven’t– you don’t want to. It consists of drinking water mixed with lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. It’s pretty hard to do because that’s all you drink besides water, so it a completely liquid diet. I’ve also done a salt water cleanse, which is basically a natural colonic you can do at home. Earlier this month I tried a cleanse that requires you to drink only 100% juice and water the first day, and then fruits, veggies, and whole grains for the rest of the week.

It’s pretty hard to do a food restrictive cleanse, I am proof of that. I was able to do an all liquid cleanse for almost three months, but I really think that it impacted my health and may be the cause of my gallstone and gallbladder issues– especailly because it was such a low calorie diet.

I just read about a colon cleanser program that basically allows you to “have 2-3 bowel movements a day, and eliminate toxins in the colon to assist with overall vital organ health.” As a result, you can expect less bloating, less water retention, and improved energy and vitality. You should not experience watery stools, severe cramping or weakness of any kind– which is pretty typical with many colon cleanser programs.

You may have seen the Duel Action Cleanse on TV.  You can save $30 off the regular price with their promotion. They are also offering free shipping which is always a plus. What I like about this cleanse is that it appears these are vitamin-like pills that you take verses drastically changing your diet, so you can get all of the great colon cleansing results without all the bad diet risks. – starting at $59.90 (plus free shipping)

Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery

On Friday while I was off from work, I found myself watching the Tyra Banks Show. The topic was following up with guests that have had plastic surgery. I’ve never had any work done myself, but I can certainly appreciate the amazing things that they are able to do. One woman who previously weighed over 600 pounds had to have hundreds of pounds of skin removed by a plastic surgeon.

It goes without saying, but she looked absolutely amazing afterward. The same was true for Big Boy, a Los Angeles based hip hop DJ who had surgery to get rid of excess skin following his Gastric Bypass Surgery. I have to admit that I have some extra skin around my mid-section, and I’ve thought about the possibility of getting a tummy tuck someday. I heard that you can get one following having your baby (i.e. moments after he/she is born). I think Britney Spears did that after her first.

I’m a California girl born and raised (until we moved to Texas), so I know that plastic surgery is all the rage– especially for celebrities. If you’re not one and you want to get a procedure, wouldn’t you at least want to be treated like one? Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery (located on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills– DUH!) offers procedures including tummy tuck, liposuction, rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, and Botox.

Selecting a good Plastic Surgeon is a big decision, but RDPS has been featured both nationally and internationally on many television shows as well as in well-known magazines and newspapers.  Even if you’ve just thought about getting a procedure done, I’d recommend reading their blog. It outlines many of the options they offer and gives a lot of information that just may ease your mind. – as low as $12/month (financing available)

Whole Foods new podcast series

I love Whole Foods (an awesome and healthy grocery store if you don’t have one near you), so I was excited to hear that they have a podcast page.  Recently I have been downloading podcasts to listen to while I work out, so this is perfect!  Each month they cover a different health topic, and this month it is cleansing to increase your level of health.

I actually know a lot about cleansing and have done several myself. Some of my friends reading this may remember awhile back I tried the Master Cleanse diet which consists of drinking water mixed with lemon juice, maple syrup,  and cayenne pepper. It’s pretty hard to do because that’s all you drink besides water, so it a completely liquid diet. I’ve also done a salt water cleanse, which is basically a natural colonic you can do at home. It’s interesting to say the least. Earlier this week I was doing a cleanse that requires you to drink only 100% juice and water the first day, and then fruits, veggies, and whole grains for the rest of the week.

The above cleanses that I mentioned are pretty extreme. If you check out the Whole Foods website, they give a lot more reasonable tips for doing a healthy cleanse and supporting the liver. It’s worth a read– and don’t forget to download the podcast too. – Free
